March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, an important reminder that there is still much progress to be made in creating more supportive systems for people with disabilities. People with disabilities are 3x more likely to be unemployed, negatively affecting their physical and mental health. At Smile Farms, we see the impact that creating meaningful work opportunities can have on people with disabilities. How can we expand opportunities to connect this community with fulfilling jobs that provide useful skills and experiences?
When Randy Lewis’s son Austin was diagnosed with autism, he became concerned about the lack of opportunities available to him after school programs ended (a worry shared by so many of us who have a family member with a developmental disability). As Vice President of Walgreens, Randy staked his career on expanding employment opportunities for people with disabilities. On this week’s episode of Celebrations Chatter, Randy shares how his journey to build a more inclusive workplace changed the lives of employees and revolutionized the way that businesses employ people with disabilities.
